Only betas (no matter how old or new) and finals of operating systems and applications that are at least 10 years old and therefore classified as abandonware are allowed to be uploaded to and shared on the BetaArchive FTP server. If you have your own FTP server where you'd like other members to upload what you're looking for to, please don't post its login details in any open forum as that will probably lead to abuse. Post the login details in the Private Servers section instead. Check that we don't already have the file on our FTP servers.

If you don't have access to the FTP servers then ask someone who has (a moderator for example). I been doing a bit of digging round and autodesk no long appear to have the service pack or any updates around. From what i heard 4.0 is a pain without these updates, i believe even a performance pack is around that would be useful if anyone still got it. The name of this file is '3dsmax_42_update.exe', which upgrades from 4.0 to 4.2. EDIT: I was rifling through my hodgepodge files, and discovered another update about which I had forgotten, '3dsmax_42_PerfPack_I05'.

This was a BETA update from Autodesk/discreet for those with P4 CPU's, and designed to address performance issues (YMMV). I believe last update was 4.26 Not quite.there were four 'as-is' updates (meaning if they went bonkers, discreet/Autodesk was less than sympathetic) released by discreet: '3dsmax429patch1.zip' '3dsmax429patch2.zip' '3dsmax429patch3.zip' '3dsmax429patch4.zip' The update to which you refer is '3dsmax42-SP1.exe'; this will upgrade 4.2 to either 4.25 if you have an AMD CPU, or 4.26 if a Pentium III/4 CPU is present, and reflected via splash screen upon successful update. 3D studio max 4 was/is plagued with glitches (particularly within Character Studio's biped animation), yet quite a few game companies released official (kneecapped) file format exporters.

Speaking of export, for CS 3.2, there was a at-no-cost-to-you update named 'cs321aupdate.exe' released, which also addressed some animation export glitches. EDIT: Apologies! I forgot to also mention: 'maxsdk_42.zip' '3dsmax_42_help.zip' 'maxscript_42_help.zip' '3dsmax_42_tutorial_help_and_files.zip', as well. These updates for 4.0 --> 4.2 do Exactly What It Says on the Tin. Also, if these files are needed and you are unable to find them, PM me please. I lost my copy years ago. That's an expensive loss. Well, yes and no, to answer your question. When Max 4.2 was released there were/are two options: install CS 2.2 or 3.2 (included in the box was a copy of CS 3.0, which is the stand alone upgrade for 3D Studio R3.1 - that's the one of mine that broke and have since located an OEM replacement.
